Texture is one of the most important tools for the practising artist. It is relevant to all our senses and never fails to invoke an emotional response. Flashy and gratuitous use of texture will make a work appear coarse and unskilled; lack of texture will make a work look flat and lifeless.

Tony Paul trained at Bournemouth Art College. He started showing his work in local exhibitions then exhibited in national galleries, including the Royal Academy. He divides his time between teaching, writing and, of course, painting. He's a regular contributor to Leisure Painter magazine and is a consultant to Daler-Rowney. His paintings are held in many private collections, including the Duchy of Cornwall. Tony lives in Bournemouth.
