Derek writes: I have to confess I'm a bit addicted to this right-wing nonsense, and I was up until 3.00am recently finishing this latest book from Vince Flynn. Having met Vince a few times I'm convinced that Vince sees himself as his counter-terrorism agent Mitch Rapp - but hey, we all have a fantasy life, don't we. The book opens on the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan with Rapp's associate Mike Nash keeping watch on two high level Taliban prisoners. Their interrogation has been stopped as their capture coincided with a visit to the base by three US senators who promised the prisoners they would be treated as the Geneva Convention requires. This really ticks off Mitch Rapp and Nash, as they have recently apprehended two Al Qaeda terror cells heading to America and they believe a third cell is still active. So in the dead of night Rapp and his team fly into Bagram disguised as members of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, remove the video feeds from the cells, and begin a vigorous interrogation of the prisoners to try to discover the location and target of the third cell. Their interrogation is interrupted by a zealous aide to the base commander and the whole thing turns to custard with Mitch Rapp arrested and huge political fall-out in Washington. The book then moves between the terrorist cell, Washington and Bagram as Rapp is returned to the US and held in prison. In Washington it's been eight years since 9/11 and with the Democrats in control of Capitol Hill, and there's a prevailing view that the time for the Mitch Rapp method of meeting violence with extreme violence has passed, and that operatives like Nash and Rapp should have their wings clipped. As Rapp and the CIA are called before the all-powerful Senate Intelligence Committee, the terrorist cell has slipped unnoticed into America, and the quiet spring afternoon in Washington is about to be shattered. But as I said, I love this stuff.
